Webinar with Story Artist Sergio Paez

Sergio Paez
On Friday 5th February Escape Studios hosted a webinar with Los Angeles based story artist Sergio Paez, interviewed by Iliana Franklin, who teaches our Master's Degree in Storyboarding and Pre-Visualisation at Escape Studios.

Sergio Paez is a storyboard artist and director, with over 20 years of experience of storyboarding for feature films, TV, and games.  Sergio was most recently episodic director on Star Wars Resistance at Lucas Arts and has previously storyboarded on many episodes of the Star Wars franchise including The Clone Wars and Rebels, often working out of Skywalker Ranch.

In this webinar, Sergio shares his "Five Pillars of Storytelling" - the secrets to success as a storyboard artist and film-maker.

About Sergio Paez
Sergio was interviewed by Iliana Franklin
In addition to his work for Lucas Arts, Sergio has also done storyboards for Pixar and many independent films; he is also a regular speaker at industry events. Sergio began his career as a 2D animator; he has worked on many films and for many studios, and is the co-author of the book: Professional Storyboarding: Rules of Thumb.

During the webinar Sergio gave feedback on individual projects Escape Studios Storyboard and Pre-vis MA students; he also talked about jobs, the animation industry, story portfolios and best practices for aspiring artists looking to enter the industry.

The Five Pillars of Storytelling

1. Be the Master of your tools
Learn well these tools and become a master! There are many tools that the storyboard artist uses professionally; not only technical but also visual tools such as cinematography, drawing skills, composition.

2. Learn about writing and story structure
People rarely think about writing, as storyboarding is often perceived as a visual art. We write with images and organise them in a meaningful way.

3. Get emotional with your storytelling
The basis for all the stories that we do is in the character's emotion. Understand where that character’s motivation comes from and where those emotions and feelings come from and learn how to show that visually.

4. Learn the business of storytelling
We do not talk about the business very often, but it is very important. If you want to make storyboarding a career, you should learn how to get into the industry. Learn how to professionally present yourself, what kind of strategies you could use to apply to companies, what rates you should charge for certain jobs, and how you charge.

5. Have a passion for learning
Never forget that this is a lifetime of learning that you are going to be doing in this profession. Learn from others, be open to suggestions, new software, new techniques, new methods - because these constantly change. The enjoyment of what we do should come from that learning, that discovery, that experimentation, that problem solved.

Storyboarding at Escape Studios
There are two main ways to study storyboarding at Escape Studios:
  • Storyboarding Evening Class Storyboarding is back in March; our next evening class in storyboarding starts on 31 March.  This evening class is taught by Blue Zoo storyboard veteran Francesca "Chess" Adams.
  • MA in Previs and Story We are also starting a class of our MA in Storyboarding and Previsualisation, starting on 28 June 2021.  This MA is the first of its kind - the only masters' course in storyboarding in the world, and one which tackles both 2D and 3D skills.  The MA is taught by storyboard veteran Iliana Franklin.
The Escape Studios Animation Blog offers a personal view on the art of animation and visual effects. To find out more about our new BA/MArt, now recruiting for September 2021, follow this link.   To apply, visit the official page here
