Taught by VFX veteran Dan Shutt and Klaudija Cermak,  the MA and Short Course in VFX teaches the art and craft of 2D and 3D visual effects.

Meet the 3D VFX Team at Escape Studios. VFX is at the heart of Escape Studios; it's where we began 20 years ago - when the industry was just starting to expand and grow.

Back in the early 2000s there were few places in the UK where students could learn the necessary skills to land that crucial first job in the VFX industry.  Below are our talented tutors who teach the art and craft of VFX at Escape Studios, helping to ensure we remain the UK's leading centre for the study of VFX.

Our Short Course and Masters' Degree in 3D VFX is back - returning to Escape Studios on 24 February 2025.  Taught by VFX veteran Dan Shutt,  the MA and Short Course in 3D VFX teaches the art and craft of 3D visual effects.

This BT Tower destruction shot is one of our all-time favourite VFX shots created at Escape Studios.  

Over the years our students have detonated many global landmarks (digitally of course) including Big Ben, Greenwich Maritime, The City of London, An Italian Campanile, a Football Stadium, an unfortunate Tube Train and countless London backstreets blown up and exploded.  

3D VFX Foundations Returns 4 March 2025

Our Evening Class in 3D VFX Foundations returns on 23 March 2025, and runs for 20 weeks. 3D VFX Foundations is a part-time evening class that teaches the art and craft of 3D Visual Effects. 

Taught by industry veteran Dan Shutt, 3D VFX Foundation course is taught live online two nights a week, Monday and Wednesday evenings, from 7pm until 10pm.

Brandon Welch to Teach 3D VFX at Escape Studios

We're extending a warm welcome to VFX artist Brandon Welch, who will teach 3D VFX to our Second Year Undergraduate VFX students. 

Brandon Welch is a VFX and Concept Artist who graduated from our Masters Degree in 3D Visual Effects.  Brandon first joined Escape Studios as a Studio Assistant and is now teaching VFX.

Brandon Welch also has a BA in Game Art and Design from De Montfort University, as well as considerable industry experience. 

Ilaria Colavito To Teach 3D VFX to 3rd Year Students

Ilaria Colavito Teaches 3D VFX at Escape Studios

We're delighted to welcome back VFX artist Ilaria Colavito to Escape Studios to teach 3D VFX to our "Level 6" (ie third year) undergraduate students this year. 

Ilaria Colavito joins us from the London VFX house Freefolk where she worked as a 3D Generalist on a number of TV series including Anansi Boys and Kaos.   Ilaria is an Escapee who took our 3D VFX MA with industry veteran Dan Shutt. While at Escape Studios Ilaria directed the award-winning short film Mechamorphosis, utilising a variety of 3D techniques.

Many congratulations to Escapee Jake Thompson who is working as a VFX artist at London VFX house Time Based Arts.

Jake took our MA in 3D VFX at Escape Studios, and graduated with a distinction. He did excellent work at Escape Studios, especially in Houdini, contributing to our official Houdini showreel. 

Jake graduated from Escape studios with a Distinction in 3D VFX.  He soon found work at London VFX house Time Based Arts.

Save the Date! The VFX Festival is back - returning to London on 3-4 June 2024 at the BFI IMAX on London's South Bank at Waterloo.  The  2024 VFX Festival will be a hybrid event, both online and in person.

An Evening With Paul Franklin 23 Jan 2024

Calling all currently enrolled students at Escape Studios - join us for "An Evening With Paul Franklin" on Tuesday 23 Jan 2024 at 5.30pm. 

Paul Franklin is an Oscar winning VFX supervisor who has supervised the visual effects on films such as Dark Knight, Inception, and Interstellar. 

Franklin has won two BAFTAs and is the co-founder of the global VFX powerhouse Double Negative.  

Franklin is an artist who knows VFX inside out, and he offers our students a unique insight into how big budget visual effects movies get made, and what a visual effects supervisor actually does.

3D VFX Taster Day Sat 14 October 2023

On Saturday 14th October 2023 at 10am we're hosting a 3D VFX "Taster Day" at our new Escape Studios North Greenwich Campus.  Taster days are a great chance to find out more about the courses at Escape Studios, how they run and who teaches them.  

Come along on Saturday and learn the basics of 3D Modeling, how to create simple geometry, and make it look real.

Meet your tutors - VFX expert Carlos Poon teaches our second year undergraduate vfx artists the art of 3D VFX.  Carlos teaches VX5001, a second year VFX module in which our VFX students master the art of modeling, texturing, match move and lighting. 

Carlos Poon has worked across all major 3D industries for 14 years, starting in industrial design, then working as Assistant Technical Supervisor on the BAFTA winning TV series 'Tiny Planets'.

VX5001 "3D VFX Pro" is a second year visual effects module in which our undergraduate vfx students learn to master the art of 3D modelling, matchmoving, texturing and lighting.  It builds on the first year 3D VFX Module VX4002.

AN5001 starts on Monday 18th September 2023, and is taught by VFX veteran Carlos Poon.

We are delighted to announce our series of tutorials in Mudbox, the 3D Modeling program created by Autodesk to sculpt 3D models. 

Our Escape Studios Vimeo Tutorial Channel supports our students with a vast range of online resources for Modeling, as well as Materials, Lighting and Rendering.  Our Vimeo Tutorial Channel is our central hub for our animation and VFX video tutorials, making it easy for our students to find tutorials to support their classroom studies.  We also have tutorials on Materials, Lighting and Rendering in Arnold, Renderman, Unreal Engine, and also how to use Qube, the Escape Studios' Render Farm.

Our Vimeo Tutorial Channel is our central hub for our animation and VFX video tutorials, making it easy for our students to find tutorials to support their classroom studies.   We have many 3D Modeling tutorials, covering Polygons and NURBS in Maya, as well as Z Brush and Mudbox.
