Model and Texture a Cereal Box in Maya

In this super basic tutorial we show how to do very basic modelling and texturing in Autodesk Maya and Photoshop to create and texture Cereal Box.  This tutorial is divided into two parts - the Maya part, where we create the box and UV it (above), and the Photoshop part (below), where we finesse the texturing.  This exercise forms part of the basic introduction to Maya - our students can find many more tutorials on animation and VFX at the Vimeo Tutorial Channel here.

Beginner Maya Tutorial - Dice Texture

In the free video tutorial for beginners in Autodesk Maya (we have a lot of new beginners starting with us this month) we tackle a super simple modelling and texturing exercise - how to create a die (single of dice), bevel it, and texture it, downloading a free texture map from the web. The tutorial is aimed at complete beginners who have never used Autodesk Maya before. In addition, you can follow the steps outlined below, including - for extra sophistication - how to add a bump map (not covered in the video above). You can find more videos on modelling and texturing in Maya at our Vimeo Channel here.

UFO Animation with Blend Shapes by Gabriel Munn
We've uploaded a new tutorial to our expanding Vimeo Tutorial Channel.  This latest tutorial demonstrates how to animate Blend Shapes (also known as Morph Targets) in Maya; you can find the tutorial here at our Vimeo channel.

Create a simple object (a cube) and turn it into a shape-shifting UFO - as in this example by Escapee Gabriel Munn.  Blend Shapes, which are used extensively in facial rigging, are a simple animation technique that can yield impressive results.

Where Can Animators Find Free Sets and Props?

Turbosquid. Free Stuff!
Where can student animators find free sets and props for animation? You don't always want to spend time modeling the things you need for your animation shot - sometimes you just need some free props in a hurry.

The best places to begin are turbosquid.com and tf3dm.com. Both sites have plenty of free resources for animators to use; you can import sets, props, all sorts of useful items that will help bring your animation to life.

Of course, you should always give credit to the creators - professional artists always give credit where it's due.
