Our BA/MArt in 2D Animation is now recruiting for September 2026.  

In recent years 2D Animation has experienced a significant revival, both in the UK and overseas, as Studios such as Blue Zoo, Aardman Animation, and Brown Bag Films adopt new software such as ToonBoom Harmony.

Taught by seasoned industry professionals, this degree prepares students for work in the 2D animation industry.

Software

We teach 2D animation in both ToonBoom Harmony and also TV Paint. 

Toonboom Harmony 

Our 2D animators have access to ToonBoom Harmony, increasingly the dominant 2D software in the animation industry, and used by Blue Zoo, Aardman Animation, and Brown Bag Films

TV Paint

In October 2025 Escape Studios added TV Paint to our software toolkit, giving our 2D animation students even more opportunities to develop professional 2D animation skills.

Unlike vector-based tools, TV Paint is bitmap-based, which means it feels closer to traditional hand-drawn animation — perfect for artists who want to bring a classical touch to digital work. Many traditional animators who used to work with pencil and paper now work with TV Paint.

Other software includes Adobe Animate (the software formerly known as Flash), and Toonboom Storyboard Pro.
