What's The Point of Winning Festival Awards?

Here at Escape Studios our student film-makers have won hundreds of festival awards - more than 500 over the past decade.  But what's the point of it all?  Do awards make a difference?

At Escape Studios we train Studio-Ready Talent, teaching artists to work in teams and produce professional-quality work, simulating as closely as possible the realities of a studio environment.

Festival awards are a recognition that the work produced by our students is of professional quality.  Awards also help to burnish our students' IMDB profiles - an important first step in winning recognition in our industry.

Why Winning Festival Awards Matters
Jerich0 - Film of The Year at The Rookies
For animation students, festival awards  are a badge of recognition of the quality of your work.  Festivals showcase the best animated short films, and invite industry professionals, recruiters, and fellow animators to see the best work being completed by recent graduates - giving aspiring film-makers a unique opportunity to showcase their talent.

Recognition and Validation
Winning an award at a festival means your work has been reviewed and appreciated by industry professionals. This recognition is a signal to others that you have a unique, creative voice.

Networking Opportunities
Film festivals are attended by industry insiders—producers, directors, agents, and other animators. Winning an award makes you memorable and opens doors to potential collaborations, internships, or job opportunities that might not be accessible otherwise.  This is all part of the "soft-skill" known as "Networking".

Funding and Distribution Support
Home Sweet Home at the BAFF Awards
An award can act as a stepping stone to funding for future projects or distribution offers - such as the Licensing Deal with Alaskan Airlines for our short film "Flame".  Many animation producers and distributors look at festival winners as potential collaborators, helping to bring your next project to life.

Portfolio and Resume
Being able to list festival awards on your resume or portfolio - and at the IMDB - significantly enhances your professional profile.  An IMDB profile with festival wins attached signals to animation recruiters that you are a recognised talent in your field—qualities that can set you apart from other candidates.

Audience Reach and Exposure

Winning an award guarantees that your film gets more visibility. Many festivals share winners on their social media channels, websites, and press releases, bringing your work to a broader audience and potentially helping it go viral.  In 20219 the animated short film Jerich0 was shortlisted for a student BAFTA.

Financial Rewards
On rare occasions, a festival win can bring in serious money.  In 2022 the animated short "Little Gestures" won $10,000 at the GUFA Film Awards in Hong Kong

While winning isn’t everything, it’s a valuable accolade that can accelerate our students' career path, opening doors and establishing a reputation in the competitive world of animation.
