Escape Studios VPN - 2024 Update

VPN at Escape Studios
How does the VPN work at Escape Studios? "VPN" stands for "Virtual Private Network", ie a service that helps users maintain privacy and security online.

Escape Studios' VPN establishes a secure, encrypted connection between our students' home computer and the internet, providing a private tunnel for data and communications.

At Escape Studios, the VPN allows (but with important limitations - see below) our students to work remotely, accessing all the software that they would normally use if they were working on site.

By connecting to our VPN, users open a "tunnel" that goes from their computer and through our firewall to connect to to the Escape network.

The chief limitation on the VPN is the number of workstations available. If you are working remotely during normal working hours, your chances of finding a free workstation are low.  But if you are working in the late afternoon/evening or on weekends, your chances are much higher, as many more machines will be available.

Once connected, students can either use the Remote Workstation facility or (for online-only students) make use of our VPN Licenses.

Workflow Tips for All Our Students

1. Use The UG drive
Escape Studios' UG drive remains the best way for our students to stay organised and collaborate effectively across their projects. To see more about the UG drive, see this blog post

2. Remote Access
We don’t have a 1:1 ratio of workstations to students, so accessing a machine remotely during peak times can be tricky. On campus, you have direct access, but when working from home, VPN issues or unavailable machines might disrupt your workflow.  Remember, students on campus always have priority. But, from about 4pm onwards on weekdays - and all day on weekends - more machines will be available for remote work.

3. Back Up Your Work
Always back up your data.  Systems crash, files get corrupted.  Save your work regularly and back up everything to OneDrive (you have 1TB of storage) or to your own external hard drive. Always back up your data!

4. Sync Your Work
If you’re using a personal computer, make sure to upload your files to the UG drive regularly.  Recently, a student had to leave campus to retrieve a file saved only on their PC.  Avoid this by keeping your files accessible and updated.
