How to Create Your Profile at the IMDB

Getting a listing at the Internet Movie Database is a rite of passage for anyone in the film industry. But how do you get your name listed?  For our students, the quickest way to create a profile of your own at the IMDB is to attach yourself to a project which is already listed on the IMDB. In practice, this means one of the many films being made at Escape Studios, entering festival competitions and winning prizes.

Short film projects
IMDB don't list every project that gets made - there are simply too many. But if your film is being entered into festivals and winning awards, it will most likely get listed at IMDB. Once your film is listed, you can register at IMDB and add your own name to the film.

Updating your details at IMDB
Once your film is listed at the IMDB, you can add the names of yourself and your cast and crew to the database. You do this through the IMDB tab marked "update" or "edit page". It will take a little while to get the hang of it , and the interface is a bit fiddly, but with a bit of patience you will find that it works.

IMDB is Not Quite a Wiki
Remember that IMDB is not Wikipedia. Submission of names is not automatic, so be patient. IMDB will review your submissions and, assuming all is well, they usually post them around a week later. You will get a message that looks like this (see above)

Create Your Online Identity
Soon, your name and those of your colleagues will listed online. Now you can start editing your profile, to add your CV, your demo reel, and links to your website. Remember, your goal is to create an online space for yourself as an industry professional.  You can change or edit your details at the Help Page here.

Curate your IMDB profile
Sometimes you will see a project at IMDB that should have your name on it, but doesn't.  Don't feel aggrieved - it's not personal.  All you have to do is go to the project page and update it by adding your name.  Your IMDB profile is your responsibility, you can change or edit your details - start at the Help Page here.
