The Studio Projects are designed to simulate as closely as possible the experience of working on a live client project. It runs for 12 weeks until the end of the summer term in May.
The Studio Project is worth 45 credits and is broken up into two six week projects, Project A and Project B, giving students two chances to practice their film-making, animation, and story-telling skills.
Project A is due on Wednesday 29th March. Project B is due on 17th May, the Retrospective is due on 19th May.
Project Briefs
Students can select from a number of project briefs, which aim to simulate as closely as possible the kind of projects that animators will be working on in industry.
Project Brief 1 - A Teaser/Trailer for an animated film, game or TV Show
This brief is about creating a teaser or trailer for an animated film, game or TV show. The teaser or trailer should be feel authentic and believable, as if it were actually being broadcast.
As with all narrative projects, students begin with a concept, develop this into a story, and write a short script.
Once the script is approved, students begin to storyboard the project, and edit the boards into an animatic, complete with narration, music and sound design.
Golden Acorn
To see an example of a successful teaser trailer created in this module, check out The Golden Acorn below.
The Golden Acorn was a trailer completed by 2nd year undergraduate Escape Studios Animation students, as part PR5001. It was directed by Maciej Osuch and produced by Miguel Teixera.
"Planet Mars" - Mockumenary
"Planet Mars" is a short documentary created and animated by 2nd year animation students at Escape Studios, directed by Sebastian Kuder and produced by Katerina Zacharakis.
Group work
The first task is for students to form
themselves into groups, and decide who will do what. Key roles include director, producer, writer, storyboard
artist, art director, editor and - of course- animators. Projects will
also need a CG supervisor to manage the digital pipeline and make sure
the final render is successful.
Rookies
The Studio Project takes us up to the end of May 2023 and is the last project for the 2022-23 academic year. Whichever creative brief our students choose, they must enter the final film into the 2023 annual "Rookies" contest.
PR5001 Schedule
Final Submission for PR5001
In PR5001 students complete two short films, and write a single Retrospective at the end of the module. Project A is due on Wednesday 29th March, with a short group presentation on the following day. Students should present the film as a group, and also briefly present their blog and/or website showing how the film progressed. Project B is due on Wednesday 17th May and follows the same format. Both films must be entered into "The Rookies" by 31st May. The Retrospective is due on Friday 19th May.

The Golden Acorn has won many awards including Best Teaser/Trailer at the Golden Nugget International Film Festival, and "Best Trailer" at the Vesuvius film festival.
Project Brief 2 - An animal or creature documentary
Project Brief 2 involves creating an animal or creature documentary. It could also be a "mockumentary" but, whatever it is, it must involve animals or creatures in the style of a documentary. This means it will probably involve voice-over narration.
