Meet Escape Studios' Animation Dept

At Escape Studios we are fortunate to have many talented tutors in our large and growing animation department.  

We have a depth of talent and skills among our staff that ensures we can teach all aspects of the animation pipeline, from concept art through storyboarding, animation and final render. 

Below (in no particular order) are some of our talented tutors you will find teaching animation in our classrooms at Escape Studios.

Michael Davies


Michael Davies - Head of Animation
Michael Davies is Head of Animation at Escape Studios - he first joined us in 2018. Michael is a an experienced 3D artist and a specialist in rigging.

Michael has worked on many VFX blockbusters such as Batman vs Superman, Doctor Strange and Thor Ragnarok.

Michael's rigging credits include Smaug (The Hobbit) and also The Minions for the Illumination-McGuff studio.

Michael Davies has an MA in animation; he also designed (and delivers) our pioneering MA in Character and Creature Creation, as well as being an expert in the Unreal Engine pipeline.  Michael has also created many tutorials for our students, which you can find at our Animation Vimeo Channel

Lee Caller
Lee Caller - Short Course & MA
Lee Caller is an award-winning animator who teaches our Short Course, Advanced Animation and MA Animation students at Escape Studios.  Lee is an experienced animator who combines technical and creative skills to create a great animation performance.  

Lee has won a number of industry awards for his short films Jelly Cars and The Leaching. Lee also has an MA in Animation. 

Amedeo Beretta - 2nd Year UG Tutor
Amedeo Beretta
Amedeo Beretta is a veteran animator with credits on blockbuster hits such as "Paul" and "Planet 51".  Amedeo studied the History of Cinema and Theatre at the University of Milan, and later worked for Double NegativeScanline VFX, and Ilion Animation Studios.  Amedeo  has a Master's degree in 3D Animation; he also does concept art, modeling, texturing and shading, rigging, animation, rendering and even compositing.

Amedeo is also our in-house expert on Motion Capture, having led classes in MoCap and supervised the award-winning MoCap short "Alma", which has won multiple festival awards.  He is also skilled in the use of Unreal Engine. 

Amedeo currently teaches our second year animation students. 

Iliana Franklin - Story & Previs MA
Iliana Franklin
Iliana Franklin leads our MA in Storyboarding & Previsualisation; Iliana is a storyboard artist and animator over 30 years of experience in the animation industry. 

Iliana's feature credits include The Tale of Desperaux, A Monkey’s Tale (1999) and The Princess and the Pea (2002). Iliana has also worked on many TV series.

Iliana also runs her own production company Mediaframe, a UK based creative consultancy, specializing in content development and production for illustrative, interactive and screen based media.

Steven Sole - Movement & Narrative

Steven Sole
 teaches our first year animation students the mini-module "Movement & Narrative", an exploration of creativity and design.  Steven is a character designer with over a decade of studio experience.  Steven also teaches our Evening Class in Character Design.

Steve's work includes Art Director and Designer on Mr Bean at Tiger Aspect Productions.  Steven specialises in Concept Art, Character Design and Illustration.

Steven also develops short film projects and music videos and is skilled with Zbrush and Mud Box. To see more of Steven's work, visit his official site.

Marc Stevenson
Marc Stevenson
Marc Stevenson teaches our second year undergraduate students Module AN5002, in which students tackle the art of animal and creature animation, and also teaches animation basics (AN4001) to our first year animation students.

Marc is an experienced animator with credits on multiple Hollywood VFX films including Fast & Furious 6, Avengers, Age of Ultron, Moon, and Victor Frankenstein.

Marc has also created many tutorials for our students, which you can find at our Animation Vimeo Channel.

Matteo Sanna
Matteo Sanna
Matteo Sanna
 teaches our evening class in 3D animation.  Matteo Sanna is an experienced animator whose extensive animation and VFX film credits include Avengers: Endgame, Geostorm, Avengers: Infinity War, and Hellboy.

Matteo's skills include creature animation, character animation, motion capture editing, previs and postvis, layout TD, and techvis. 

Matteo also has a thorough knowledge of knowledge of Maya, 3ds Max, and Cinema 4d.

Paul Harrison
Paul Harrison
Paul Harrison teaches our third year animation and vfx students; he is an experienced animator, 3D generalist, and also a comic book artist and writer, and content creator for children’s media. Paul is the creator of the Urban Squirrel series of comics. 

Paul has taught at London South Bank University where he taught the art of games to first and second year students, using Maya, Photoshop, After Effects and Unity, as well as supervising 3rd year creative game projects. 

Paul has also worked as a pipeline trainer at DNEG, and also worked for Escape Studios back in our Shepherd's Bush days, teaching animation and visual effects on our short courses. 

Francesca "Chess" Adams

Francesca "Chess" Adams
is a series director and storyboard artist at Blue Zoo animation in London, with many years experience in the industry. 

Chess has worked on hit series such as Digby Dragon, NumberBlocks, Go Jetters, and Millie and Lou.

Chess teaches our long-running evening class in Storyboarding, with many of her former students finding work as board artists at studios such as Blue Zoo and Jellyfish. 

Enrico Buffa 
Enrico Buffa
Enrico Buffa is a Visual Development artist living in London. 
Enrico has worked for animation studios such as Blue Zoo, Boulder Media, and Studio Bozzetto in Milan.  Enrico is proficient in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Flash, After Effects and ZBrush.
