They help to ensure that standards are consistent across the animation sector. External examiners double-check our grades, make sure we're awarding marks appropriately, and check that our standards are consistent with other universities and colleges in the UK.
Quality Control
External examiners check our marking (we second-mark all the results internally) and make sure that this has been carried out fairly, in accordance with the regulations of Coventry University, who award our degrees.

Second Marking
Second Marking is a different process. Second Marking is an internal process designed to ensure that all our marks are fair, and double checked internally. Only once second marking has taken place within Escape Studios should the agreed marks be sent to the external examiner.
Dialogue and Communication
All our tutors are expected to maintain an ongoing dialogue with the external examiner for their discipline. This involves making sure that student work is sent to the examiner in a timely manner and that the external is able to find student work easily, and cross-check the grades.
