Clement Gharini, Escape Studios' Head of VFX, has released the first of a series of tutorials on the Art and Craft of Cinematography for students of VFX, Animation and Games. Clement Gharini worked as a camera operator and compositor for more than 20 years in the film industry before joining us at Escape Studios; he teaches cinematography and compositing, as well as running our Green Screen and Motion Capture pipelines. In this first cinematography episode Clem addresses two simple questions: What is Cinematography? And...Who Needs It?
What is Cinematography?
Historically, a cinematographer is the person on film sets in charge of creating the picture of the movie, from a technical and aesthetic point of view.

The Art and Science of Lighting
Practically speaking, Cinematography is the Art and Science of Lighting as well as the control of the camera. From the lens, to the sensor.
Combine lighting with camera and you have cinematography.
Capture The World
Cinematography is effectively the discipline that captures the world and turns it into a motion picture.
Who Needs It?
But why would Game Artists, VFX Artists and Animators need Cinematography so much?
The answer is very simple.
Digital Artists Create Images
Whether we deal with live action sequences, or animated characters, or interactive worlds, we are a creating images. That is the common ground.

Digital Artists Create Images
Whether we deal with live action sequences, or animated characters, or interactive worlds, we are a creating images. That is the common ground.
So Game Artists, VFX Artists and Animators are effectively image makers. In other words - we are all Cinematographers.
The process of capturing a scene - be it real or virtual - is effectively the same in the real world and in 3D. It involves the same 3 components: a Scene, a Camera, and - ultimately - the creation of an Image.
Let There Be Light
If you think of it... One may have the best 3D modelling skills, but without light, those impressive skills will never be seen.
We Are All Cinematographers
So cinematography, or indeed being able to control how to capture those virtual scenes, is crucial to everything we do. And Cinematography is consequently as important as your primary digital expertise (Game, VFX, Animation)
Cinematography Tutorials
This new series of cinematography tutorials is specifically designed to help VFX Artists, Game Artists and Animators to get more familiar with the parameters of cameras and lights.
