We're delighted to announce a new free animation tutorial from Escape Studios' animation tutor Marc Stevenson, who has added an "arachnid animation" tutorial to our Vimeo Channel - you can see the introduction above. Marc's tutorial demonstrates how to animate spiders using Autodesk Maya - showing how to break down complex motion into simple parts to get a sophisticated result.
Spider Animation Tutorial - Part One
The tutorial teaches students how to tackle creature animation using Autodesk Maya. You can watch the first part below:
Spiders Rigs
Raa Spider Rig
Spiders look complex - eight legs moving together at furious speed - and hard to animate. But Marc teaches a simple technique which allows the animator to keyframe just two animation curves - and then copy these throughout the rig.
There are a number of free spider rigs which you can download for free. The rig used by Marc in the tutorial is this black widow spider rig - free for download from animationbuffet.com.

Students can also use the Raa Spider Rig. Raa is free, and can be downloaded here. Raa is an easy-to-learn, low poly rig, perfect for learning creature locomotion.
Cyborg Spider Rig
There is also a free cyborg spider rig for download from HighEnd3D.com.
Spider Animation - Part Two
In this tutorial Marc shows how to animate a spider in motion. The class is aimed at animation beginners. You don't need to know anything about animation to follow the class - though a basic understanding of the Maya interface will certainly help.

Marc's system breaks down an apparently complex action into simple components, making the difficult seem easy.
