Mark Ranson and Joel Gray from Void Interactive

Mark Ranson and Joel Gray from Void Interactive
At Hertfordshire University's annual Expo on Thursday 21 May, game designers Mark Ranson and Joel Gray from Void Interactive talked about their careers at the video games company, producing games such as the First Person Shooter "Ready or Not".

One of the key messages of Mark and Joel's talk was the importance of optimising game assets for real-life game play, ensuring that the user experience is successful even on sub-optimal platforms.

Void Interactive
Mark Ranson and Joel Gray from Void Interactive work for the Irish-based studio, producers of the video game Ready or Not. Mark and Jeol worked in the industry for companies like Rocksteady for five years, before leaving to join startup Void Interactive

Void Interactive was started in 2016 by three founders - Stirling Rank, Julio Rodriguez, and Ryan Post.  Now it is a much bigger organisation, employing 80 people around the globe.  The three founders started Void Interactive "with a vision to make games that they personally wanted to play".  The finance came almost by accident, one of the founders "met an investor in a bar over a cigar who said - yes, I like the sound of this”.

Ready or Not
Void Interactive is headquartered in Cork, Ireland, but it is an entirely remote studio with employees all over the world in multiple time zones.  Mark and Jeol described it as a "trust based system", in which "no-one is tracking holidays or time off". The important thing is "just do the job".

Pipeline Efficiency
Marc and Joel explained that the video games pipeline needs to be very efficient; the Design Dept "always wants to throw in the kitchen sink, but Engineering needs it to make it work in the game play".
Everything has to be optimised for the game's Memory Budget.  Working in a game, not every department can get what they want.  Unreal engine release new features all the time, but not all the features will work in your pipeline.

Advice for Games Students
Marc and Joel explained that naming conventions really do matter – the game play has to be optimised; textures need to be minimised in order to make the game play work. Textures and meshes take up a lot of memory; if the memory budget blows - then you will have crashes in the gameplay – which is a disaster. You always need to build your game for the lowest spec platform.

Void Interactive
Void Interactive is a video games company originally by founded Stirling Rank, Julio Rodriguez, and Ryan Post. The team originally formed in New Zealand before later relocating and establishing their headquarters in Cork, Ireland.
