Comics Industry Panel at Escape Studios

At last night's Comics Panel at Escape Studios, part of 2026 "EscapeVerse Live", Comic Book UK's Mark Fuller hosted a panel on "Comic Industry Careers"

Mark Fuller was joined by comic artist Lyndon White, comics publisher Andrew Mark Sewell, head of B7 Media Ltd, and manga artist Elena Vitagliano.  The panel explored the challenges and opportunities around working in the comics industry, focusing on how to earn a living in a highly competitive landscape.

The Business of Comics
Panel hosted by Mark Fuller of Comic Book UK
Elena Vitagliano
stressed the importance of entering competitions, pitching ideas, and not being deterred by rejection.

"You have to keep at it; with persistence and effort it can be possible to achieve success" - defined by Elena as "being able to make a living from comics" - rather than working a day job and then doing comics on the side.

New Media, New Opportunities
With fewer comic shops, and traditional publishers operating on thin margins, comics artists need to develop new means of reaching their audience.  Young artists should consider working online, using sites such as Kickstarter to raise funds for new projects.  Reaching comics editors can be hard, and publishers tend to be reluctant to invest in new talent, or in young artists who do not already have a following. So, building an audience and a fan base is an important priority for an aspiring comics artist.

Take Opportunities - However Small
Lyndon White stressed the importance of seizing opportunities, however trivial they might seem at the time, because every job in the industry (no matter how lowly) brings with it new ideas, new learning, and new contacts.
