Escape Studios and The Art of The Ident

At Escape Studios, students are encouraged to create idents—short animated sequences used for branding, such as the charming animation created by Maria Robertson on left. 

Many students have also created custom idents for their short film projects, and in 2022 our students created a series of custom idents for the British Animation Awards (BAAs).  Scroll down to see some of the best Escape Studios idents below. 

Creating idents

Idents help students grasp essential animation principles, from timing and composition to typography and visual storytelling. Since they are short-form content, they offer a manageable way to develop and refine these skills.

Creative Freedom & Experimentation

Idents allow students to experiment with different animation styles, visual effects, and branding techniques.  Many students have adapted the Escape Studios brand to suit the style of their own short films. Check out some of our best student work to see some examples. 

Building a Strong Portfolio

A well-crafted ident can be a great addition to a student’s showreel. It demonstrates technical ability, design sensibility, and storytelling skills— elements that employers look for in animation, VFX, and motion design roles.

Understanding Branding & Visual Identity

Idents aren’t just about flashy animation—they’re about communication.  By designing idents, students learn how animation reinforces a brand’s identity - an important  skill for careers in advertising, broadcasting, and digital media.
