Stephan Franck: An Approach to Storyboarding

Stephan Franck is a Hollywood storyboard artist whose story credits include Spider-Man: Into the Spider-VerseDespicable MeKung Fu Panda: and Osmosis Jones.   In this excellent short video he explores some of the fundamental skills required of a story board artist, including speed and visual efficiency.  Stephan's video is valuable resource for our student board artists, as we start the process of extending the online learning resources available to our storyboarding students, just as we have been doing for our student animators at our online Vimeo Tutorial Channel.

About Stephan Franck

Jobs in storyboarding
Skilled storyboard artists are in high demand; and industry tells us that there is a serious skills shortage here in the UK, one of the key reasons why we have launched two courses in storyboarding in recent years, one full time and one part time.

Storyboarding - One Job - Many Skills
Storyboarding is a complex craft that involves the ability to tell a story visually using both traditional drawing and also (increasingly) 3D tools, such as PanelForge and Storyboard Pro.  Storyboard artists must also understand acting, performance, cinematography - and also have a sense of fun and entertainment about their work. Above all, they must learn to be clear.  Great board artists often become directors - storyboarding can be a route to the very top of our industry.

Francesca "Chess" Adams
Storyboarding Evening class
Storyboarding is back in the New Year; our next evening class in storyboarding starts at our central London campus at 190 High Holborn on 22nd January 2020.

The 8 week evening class is led by Francesca "Chess" Adams,  a story board artist at Blue Zoo, one of London's leading animation houses.

MA in Previs and Story
We are also running a new MA in Storyboarding and Previsualisation, starting on 17th February 2020, for those who want to dig deeper into the story and previs skillset. This MA is the first of its kind - the only masters' course in storyboarding in the world, and one which tackles both 2D and 3D skills.

Iliana Franklin
MA Tutor: Iliana Franklin
Iliana Franklin is the newest member of the animation team at Escape Studios.  Iliana teaches our new master's degree in Storyboarding and Previsualisation, which launched in September and is already producing some remarkably skilled and imaginative work.

Iliana Franklin has worked in the animation industry for over 30 years.  Her feature credits include The Tale of DesperauxA Monkey’s Tale (1999) and The Princess and the Pea (2002). She has also worked on various TV shows including Mecky and friends (1994), Hungarian Folk Tales (1992-1996),  Spirou (1993–1995), and Carland Cross (1996).

Storyboarding is one of the most exciting areas of growth in our industry and also at Escape Studios, because it focuses on the most creative part of our industry - the development of new and original content.  Our successful short films such as Jericho, Home Sweet Home, Adam & Eve Mk II and Minuet all began as storyboards, and our in-house board artists are already developing new and original material to turn into compelling stories.

The Escape Studios Animation Blog offers a personal view on the art of animation and visual effects. To find out more about our new BA/MArt, now recruiting for September 2020, follow this link.   To apply, visit the official page here.
