Anim TD in Maya & Houdini Starts 9 Jan 2019

Dan Shutt
Our newest animation evening class, Animation Technical Direction with Maya and Houdini, starts on 9 January 2019. The tutor is one of our most long-standing and experienced staff members, Dan Shutt, who will be introducing students to the fast-growing field of technical animation.

That is to say, all the physics-based stuff that traditional keyframe animators tend not to have to deal with - such as fur, hair, cloth and muscle systems. This is a part-time course, running on Wednesday evenings from 7-10pm, for 8 evenings, designed to fit around jobs and families.

What's this all about?
Technical Animation. It's an area of significant skills shortages, with studios like Framestore even running their own internal classes to bridge the skills gap. This course is an 8 week introduction which will enable students to learn the basics of technical animation in Maya and Houdini.

Who is it for?
The class is aimed at working or training animators who want to improve their technical skills, as they will learn the basics of simulations, effects and physics-based animation. Students should ideally have some prior knowledge of the software. Students will be expected to attend an evening class one night a week, and will develop a portfolio or demo reel to showcase their skills.

Tutor - Dan Shutt
The course will be taught by our veteran 3D tutor, Daniel Shutt.

Paddington 2
Employability
There is increasing demand for technically skilled animators from many studios, both in London and elsewhere.  Escapees such as Emma Riddell and Francesco Nevi graduated from Escape Studios and were snapped up by Framestore to work as Animation TDs, working on Paddington 2 and other projects.
