Escape Studios Animation Reel Summer 2020
We're proud to present the Summer 2020 Escape Studios Animation Demo Reel. This latest edit of our best shots showcases the finest work our animation students have put together since we cut our last reel. Our students keep doing better and better work, setting higher and higher standards for what can be achieved; all of the work shown is taken from the various short films which are being entered into festivals, many of them collaborations between different departments at Escape Studios. As ever, we have had to make some hard choices this time around, leaving out much excellent work from this latest selection of our best character, creature and short film animation.

Scorpion Animation Tutorial at Vimeo
Artwork by Lee Caller |
The tutorial shows how to animate a six-legged creature; in this case a robot scorpion.
The tutorial takes a superficially complex action - a multi-legged creature - and shows how to break the motion down into simple components. Animators can create a successful outcome with just one or two animation curves.

Helicopter Airship Animation Tutorial
Airship Animation |
The videos are the latest addition to our rapidly expanding Vimeo channel.
In this step-by-step tutorial, we explain how to approach the challenge of animating a helicopter/airship in motion. The airship has a flexible caboose, which must be animated so that it overlaps the main action and settles in a naturalistic and believable way.
The purpose of the tutorial is to learn the principle of flexibility and overlapping action, one of the original 12 Principles of Animation.

What Does an Animation Editor Do?
Movieola |
Making an animated film is a collaborative effort and is almost always completed with a team of people; the editor is one of the key creative roles on any production.
We encourage all our students at Escape Studios to try their hand at film editing, it's an important job and one of the most interesting seats to occupy on any production.

Introducing: "Hat Shop"
Meet "Hat Shop", a short film written and directed by Stevie Stedman, one of our MA students studying Storyboarding and Previsualisation at Escape Studios.
"Hat Shop" is a short story set in a futuristic robotic world.
Like "Moon Rockz" "Street Ratz" and "Animal Lover", the film was a collaboration between students on our Master's Degree in Storyboarding & Previsualisation and undergraduate students studying the Art of Computer Animation - something we have tried this year for the first time.
Collaborations between departments are not (of course) unusual in industry. Getting our storyboarding students to work together with undergraduate animators is one of the many ways in which we prepare our students for the realities of working in industry.
"Hat Shop" was completed entirely under Lockdown. It is currently being entered into film festivals, and we wish the team every success.

Why Animators Need Colour Grading
What is colour grading, and why do animators need it? In film-making, colour grading - sometimes called colour balancing, or colour timing - is the process of adjusting the colour of every shot in a film to harmonise the overall look and feel of the film, and make sure that each shot flows seamlessly into the next. Colour Grading is an essential final step in the post-production of a short film, ensuring that every shot has the right colour balance. We're recommending this short video above which shows how to do successful colour grading in Adobe Premiere.

Film Credits: Thanks and Special Thanks
Last week our second year animation students raced for the finish line on their final year projects, putting together lists of credits, including various people to thank.
Credits are important to get right. Leave people out, spell their names wrong - there are all kinds of ways to annoy your fellow film-makers (and even make enemies). One area where students get confused is over thanks and special thanks - whom should you thank, and when?
The key thing to remember is that thanking people costs you nothing; it is a free way to earn goodwill. So the general rule is this: thank often, widely and generously.
