Mit Circs and Extensions at Escape Studios

What happens if a student fails to meet an academic deadline at Escape Studios? Or, if a student hasn't yet missed a deadline, but thinks they might miss it? There are two online forms our students need to know about.

The first form is the Extenuating Circumstances form, which applies when a student - through no fault of their own - fails to meet an academic deadline. The second is the Deadline Extension Form, which applies when a student needs more time to complete a project - but has not yet missed the deadline.

Academic Regulations
Our academic regulations are not our own, they are supplied by the University of Kent, who ultimately award degrees to students at Escape Studios. It's important to understand that the tutors at Escape have no discretion when it comes to applying these regulations; we are all bound by them. So, all our students need to inform themselves about the right procedures to follow if they think they're likely to miss a deadline.

Extenuating Circumstances
Apply through MYPCL Portal
Extenuating Circumstances
(also sometimes known as Mitigating Circumstances, or "Mit Circs"), applies when a student - through no fault of their own - fails to meet an academic deadline.  Mit Circs are applied for through MYPCL, the PCL Student Portal. The Mit Circs form is requested after the event, and the student will need a proper reason (such as a medical emergency) to explain why they could not submit on time. For more information, contact Student Services.

Deadline Extension form
The Deadline Extension Form should be filled out when the deadline is looming, but has not yet been passed.  Again, Mit Circs are applied for through MYPCL, the PCL Student Portal.  Deadline Extensions only apply when there are circumstances are beyond the student's control, and the student will miss the deadline through no fault of their own.  For more information, contact Student Services

Hand it in early
As a general rule, it's always best to hand your work in early, even if you think it isn't perfect. Handing in work close to a deadline exposes you to a level of risk which you just don't need.  Your internet connection could go down at the last minute - any number of late night problems could arise, and these are not considered good excuses for failing to deliver on time.

Late work
Unlike late submission at some universities, Kent regulations are unforgiving about work that is handed in late - it is graded a zero. In other words, a fail.

November 2021 Update
All extensions and Extenuating are now applied for through MYPCL and Student Services no longer accept the forms.  Extensions are for up to seven days only and should be applied for 24 hours or more before the deadline.  If the student is using the self certification then it must be 24 hours before as we Student Services give the extension from the date the application is made.  Extenuating Circumstances can be made up to five days after the submission date and this needs to have evidence.  Students cannot self certify for extenuating circumstances.
