Quick Time - Free Mac Recording Software

For all our tutors at Escape Studios (and beyond), who are currently transitioning to online delivery, don't forget the very powerful (and free) Quick Time - Free Mac Recording Software for Mac Users.

Quick Time is a free Apple product that, among other things, has a handy screen capture tool, which allows you to record video feedback of your students' work.  Here is how it works:

Launch the QuickTime App
To use QuickTime, launch the app, then go to file/new screen recording. Once you have done that, you can decide how big a section of your screen you want to record.

Screen Recording in Mojave

With macOS Mojave, you can press Shift-Command (⌘)-5 on your keyboard to see all the controls you need to record video and capture still images of your screen. Use these onscreen controls to select whether to record the entire screen, record a selected portion, or capture a still image of your screen.

Big files
QuickTime is pretty simple to use, though it does tend to generate quite large uncompressed files. It's easy to get to well over 100Mb even in a short video.

No Pause Button
Another downside of recording your screen with QuickTime is that it does not have a pause button (or, if it does, I can't find it), so you can't pause in mid-recording to make a cup of tea or answer the front door.
