Attaching and un-attaching objects in Maya can be a fiddly process. Attaching things isn't usually a problem, but un-attaching them can be more tricky, especially if you want to avoid bumps in the animation. Marc's tutorial shows how to do this smoothly and seamlessly.

ParentMaster Plugin
One alternative way of attaching and un-attaching objects in Maya is to download the ParentMaster, a plugin created by Paolo Dominici which greatly simplifies the business of attaching and un-attaching objects in Maya.
Say you want to animate a character picking up a ball and then dropping it. The ParentMaster makes your life much easier, though installing it will take a few minutes.

Other great Maya Plugins
Other free Maya plugins we recommend include the TweenMachine, Studio Library, and also aTools. All are free to download and install.
