Watch Disney's smash hit animated film Frozen and you will find some first class acting, beautiful work which arguably takes the medium to a whole new level of sophistication and skill. But how do animators achieve such great acting? The answer of course is just the same as it would have been at the Disney studio 70 or 80 years ago: if you want great acting, study great actors. Below is an excellent shot progression showing how animators on Frozen used live action reference to bring their shots to life.
All animators start with a blank screen, and as professional artists we need methods that we can rely on to produce work we can be proud of, every time. Using live action reference for your shots is one way to achieve success with a minimum of pain.
It's something you'll see time after time on "making of" videos - footage of animators acting out shots themselves, and then using the live action footage to inspire their work, and make it believable.

Nowadays, you can import the finished footage into your Maya scene file, and work directly off the reference. To see in detail how to gather live action reference for your shot, and import it onto an image plane in Maya, follow this link.
